Robert Longo
Robert Longo (born January 7, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American artist who lives and works in New York.
Longo took art lessons in the studio of the sculptor artist Leonda Finke and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence.
He completed his studies at Buffalo State College in the state of New York in 1975.
In 1974, he came into contact with the student Cindy Sherman and in the years that followed, intensively exploring the media of installation, performance, video art and photography.
Longo’s artistic activities include the visual arts (painting, print, mixed media, multimedia), film and music video.
He is known for his monumental hyper-realistic drawings. Powerful, dynamic charcoal drawings that captivate the viewer with their special technique and the power of the motives.
Robert Longo uses existing photographs as models. He isolates individual details and focuses on them by working out the lighting conditions to such an extent that they are taken to extremes. The oversized formats of the black and white charcoal drawings manage to stand out from the originals as independent and extraordinary works of art.
